The Perfect Poke Bowl (Plus Weird Rants)
Rant 1: I've been thinking about everything, a lot. I don't really know why. All these old memories I had forgotten came bubbling up to the surface. I think it's because I've been writing a lot. I put myself into these characters, and sometimes the simplicity of their lives makes me envious. Sometimes they make me want to pack up and move.
Rant 2: Maybe you won't understand this, but I keep feeling nostalgic. It's similar to the feeling of when you’re 18 and you give your mom a hug after she moves you into your new dorm and you guys know you’re probably not gonna see each other till Thanksgiving or Christmas and that’s okay, and it doesn’t hurt right away. It takes a while. A few hours go by, and you’re sitting in your dorm room, and you’re looking at the ceiling, and you wonder why you didn’t cry more, or why you didn’t hug her longer, or if you showed her that you loved her enough, and, for the first time, you realize that you’re on your own, and it’s scary, and it’s weird, and it’s uncomfortable, and it’s your life, and you can’t change it. I don't even know if that makes sense to you. Hopefully it does.
Rant 3: Also, I really wanted to go to the Mitski concert but all her destinations are in cool, far away places like New York. I was thinking about flying, but thats way too expensive. However, Julia Jacklin is the opener. I listen to her album Crushing on repeat almost everyday. She has a voice that's so soothing but also so mesmerizing. My friend Teale saw her live in Austin and I really wish I could have gone. Her voice just scratches a particular part of my brain that is hard to reach. One day I will see her live in concert, I know it. If I'm being honest, I'd rather see her in concert than Mitski. Obviously I love Mitski, but Julia just gets me better. She has so few songs yet every song she has is amazing. Her discography is insanely good, which is so unheard of. God, I guess I'm ranting again. Anyways, case in point, the Mitski concert is a no-go.
The Perfect Poke Bowl According to Science:
Start with sushi rice or a half rice half greens base.
Then, you choose you proteins. I usually do a mix of crab salad, salmon, FRESH shrimp, and tuna (preferably spicy tuna). If you get panko or fried shrimp in your poke bowl, your a saitest. I don't make the rules, I just enforce them.
Next is the toppings. Most people are ignorant and choose not to get mango and pineapple, but that's a mistake. It makes the whole dish. So once you have those two, you have to get green onions, edamame, cucumber, avocado, and pickled ginger. Those are your staples. You can't skip them. From there you can add anything else your heart desires, just please no peppers. It's not a taco bowl!
Lastly, is your sauces. If you don't get spicy mayo and eel or unagi sauce, you're doing it wrong. Nothing else is acceptable. Again, I don't make the rules. If you want you can add crispies, sesame seeds, etc. but it's not a requirement.
Now you have the most perfect poke bowl known to man. You're welcome.
